How to Make a Haunted Yard

Posted on: August 24, 2011

It's easy and fun to make a haunted yard for Halloween! Delight trick or treaters with a scary scenario that begins as soon as they head up your walkway. Follow these step by step instructions that will teach you how to make a haunted yard.

Introduction

A haunted yard can be as simple as a few scattered tombstones, or as elaborate as automated props that move and speak. You may want to start small the first year, as props can be saved, from year to year, so you can expand your haunted yard each Halloween.

Step 1: Examine What You Have

Take a look at your yard, and see if there are features you can incorporate into your haunted yard. Tree stumps make great stands for smoking witch's cauldrons, shrubs can provide hiding places for costumed monsters to hide behind until they emerge suddenly to scare your trick or treaters, and fences can be used to hang body parts from. Define the walk way that trick or treaters will take to your front door, as you'll want to place your decorations close to the path, so they can be enjoyed.

Step 2: Create a Haunted Atmosphere

  1. Dangle spider webs from trees and bushes along the walkway.
  2. Add accent lighting such as strobe lights, flood lights or black lights.
  3. Utilize outdoor speakers to play creepy Halloween music.
  4. Place a fog machine near the entrance.

Step 3: Add Props

  1. Place tombstones with spooky epitaphs around the yard. Insert a stuffed latex glove in the ground in front of one of the tombstones to give the appearance of an escaping corpse.
  2. Position zombies around the yard. Make them by stuffing clothes with straw, and topping the body with a stuffed Halloween mask.
  3. Toss plastic body parts around the yard.
  4. Prop a straw broom topped with a witch's hat near the entrance way.
